Hanging instructions

Great, you are going to hang wallpaper! Now it is important that you do it the right way. With these hanging instructions from ESTAhome.nl hanging wallpaper becomes a piece of cake! Read the simple steps below.

Apply the paste on the wallpaper, let it rest and hang it on the wall (paper backed wallpaper)

  • 1. Cut the wallpaper strips to the correct length and take an additional margin of 5 to 10 cm at the top and bottom. For wallcoverings with a pattern, place the strips exactly against one another and cut them one by one so that the pattern matches well. When you cut all strips at once to size, mark the strips with a number (thin with a pencil) so that you know the sequence of all wallpaper strips.
  • 2. Lay out a wallpaper strip on a long table, with the backside facing up.
  • 3. Apply wallpaper paste, from the middle, evenly over the entire surface. Don't forget the edges and corners.
  • 4. Then pick up one edge of the paper and fold it over to the center, without creasing the paper. Do the same thing with the other edge. Slightly roll the folded strip and let it rest/soak, depending on the type of wallpaper, for five to ten minutes (following the guidelines on the role of the label).
  • 5. Start hanging the wallpaper on the side of the main light source/window.
  • 6. Take the first folded strip and unfold the top half. Grasp the top with both hands and stick it (with a little overlap (3cm) with the ceiling) against the wall.
  • 7. Use a wallpaper brush to gently rub the wallpaper strip against the wall. If rubbed too hard, the paper will be extra stretched which will result in open seams which will provide a less good end result.
  • 8. Remove possible glue residues on the front of the wallpaper directly with a sponge and tepid water.
  • 9. (if necessary) Use a seam roller for smoothing out wallpaper seams/joins (only with smooth wallpapers).
  • 10. Cut off excess wallpaper on the top and bottom with a utility knife. Hold a wallpaper spatula against the bottom of the wall or along a baseboard so that the utility knife can cut away the excess paper neat and tight.
  • 11. Paste the following wallpaper strip in the same way and make sure the pattern fits well on the wallpaper strip you just pasted on the wall.

Paste the wall and place the wallpaper or paste as normalwallpaper (non-woven wallpaper)

  • 1. Apply the paste for non-woven wallpaper evenly on the wall.
  • 2. Start hanging the wallcovering on the side of the main light source/window.
  • 3. Apply the wallpaper directly on the wall. If desired, you can also cut wallpaper strips beforehand but you can also apply the wallpaper straight from the roll.
  • 4. Grasp the top of the first strip with both hands and stick it (with a little overlap (3cm) with the ceiling) against the wall. Work from top to bottom and gently smooth the complete (cut to size) wallpaper strip against the wall.
  • 5. Use a wallpaper brush to gently rub the wallpaper strip against the wall. If rubbed too hard, the paper will be extra stretched which will result in open seams which will provide a less good end result.
  • 6. (if necessary) Use a seam roller for smoothing out wallpaper seams/joins (only with smooth wallpapers).
  • 7. Cut off excess wallpaper on the top and bottom with a utility knife. Hold a wallpaper spatula against the bottom of the wall or along a baseboard so that the utility knife can cut away the excess paper neat and tight.
  • 8. Paste the following wallpaper strip in the same way and make sure the pattern fits well on the previously pasted strip.

Reverse alternate lengths

This means that every second wallpaper strip is hung upside down. Because you change the paste direction the wallpaper gets a special effect. The major reason to apply this type of paste is to create a greater effect (for example, in a dip-dye pattern). However you can also paste this wallpaper the usual way (all strips in the same direction), the choice is yours. The difference in effect can be viewed below.
